ALWAR: Violence erupted in Alwar district on Saturday when two groups of villagers fired at each-other following tension over panchayat elections in Bhainsada village under Pahadi police station area.
At least eight people sustained bullet injuries. The two groups had locked horns on Friday also when elections were held for the post of sarpanch.
According to the police, tension had been prevailing in the area since Friday.
"Minor incidents of clashes between two groups continued throughout Friday," said a police officer.
The supporters of both groups had gathered at a place in the village on Saturday morning when the selection of up-sarpanch was to be decided. Supporters of both groups started shouting slogans and tension escalated.
A few who were carrying guns opened fire in which eight men, identified as Bachcu, Mukut, Puran, Sundar, Hari Ram, Hari Kishan, Geeta and Manju, were seriously injured.
Some policemen from Pahadi police station arrived at the spot, but they kept away until additional forces reached the spot from Alwar. Eleven men have been rounded up in connection with the firing incident.
