Contractors' strike: No end in sight

JAIPUR: Politics seems to have taken precedence over city's development as mayor Jyoti Khandelwal and her deputy Manish Pareek hold opposite views
on contractors' payments.
Accusing the mayor and her party of being insensitive to the problems of over three million residents of the city, Pareek demanded that the contractors on strike be paid their dues immediately. Meanwhile, the mayor said she has stopped payment as she was not satisfied with the quality and quantity of work.
The civil contractors strike entered its ninth day on Monday. The contractors' association president, Laxmant Pareek reiterated his stand that unless the JMC clears the dues, all the tendering processes will be boycotted.
"Earlier, we had gone on strike for 32 days but this time we are prepared for an indefinite period, the people support us," Pareek claimed.
As complaints came of choked drains, non-functioning street lights and heaps of garbage inside colonies kept pouring into JMC headquarters, the mayor reiterated her decision that unless she is satisfied she would not release payment.
