'Religious books can help fight stress'

JAIPUR: The second day of the 62nd annual conference of Indian Psychiatric Society on Monday saw a series of discussions and lectures on the importance of family, culture and society in removing stress-related disorders. Dr Lalit Batra, organising secretary of the conference, emphasised on the need to relook into the various religious books and ancient manuscripts, which have a solution to many contemporary problems.
Doctors admitted that most of the youths who come for counselling are either from nuclear families with parents working or they live alone. “These youths develop a strong tendency for drug addiction to get away from stress and depression. In extreme cases they go for suicide,” added Batra.
Experts agreed that urbanisation has given birth to many disorders especially among the urban youths. “The disintegration of family, sinking of social values have also contributed to this problem,” said Dr Paramjeet Singh, head, scientific committee.
The presentation by an army officer was widely appreciated. He explained the factors responsible for the high stress level among soldiers.
“Other than isolation from family and society the deployment of armed forces at extreme weather conditions also play a vital role in creating several disorders,” said the Lt-Col Dr Rajeev Saini.
