Deccan Odyssey Train
The luxury train Deccan Odyssey or the Palace on Wheels of Maharashtra is one of the best way to explore and experience the rich culture of the land of Marathas - Maharashtra.
If Rajasthan has Palace on Wheels to recreate the magic of the bygone royal Rajputana era, Maharashtra is not in anyway going to be left behind. The legacy of the mighty Marathas still lingers strong in the state and the newly launched (started running in 2003) Deccan Odyssey attempts to introduce you to this heritage. During the eight days and seven nights sojourn, the famous and the hidden treasures of the deccan landscape surface impressively one by one and make you feel elated at having undertaken a journey in this luxury train.
Moreover, the treatment accorded to you in the train is what many people yearn for throughout their life. Infact, MTDC, that runs the train has the Taj Group of Hotels handling all its operations. Isn't that enough to infuse in you a confidence that everything inside is going to be special?
Unlimited Luxury Inside
The first sight of the Deccan Odyssey is arresting. You almost stop to gaze in admiration at this midnight blue and gold train with 21 carriages.
Once inside, you realise that the Deccan Odyssey, unlike the Palace on Wheels, is not exactly royal, however, it is undoubetedly luxurious. The coaches of the train are all named after forts, monuments and sites barring the bar, which is called Mumbai High. The decor and lighting too is in keeping with the intention of giving a feeling of luxury. There are 11 passenger cars with four coupes and 2 Presedential suites with two coups each. The difference between the two lies in the latter having a double bed, an antique writing table & chair and an attached lounge with a television. For all the coups in the passenger cars, there is a single lounge.
For any service or help inside the train, there is turbaned staff, in red Peshwa style overcoats. Each coupe has its own private valet who is there to fix your problems and fulfil your needs anytime you desire. You will actually feel surprised as to how these valets are there just on the time when you need them most.
The two restaurants of the Deccan Odyssey further enhance the feeling of luxury. You will enjoy a wide range of Continental and Indian dishes here sitting on a table near the window through which scenes pass by in quick succession. A spa and a gym complete your idea of luxurious living.
The Classic Journey
The royal odyssey starts every Wednesday from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai at 1640 hours and uncovers some splendid locations for you before coming back to Mumbai. The serene beaches of Ganapatiphule, Tarkarli and Goa, the forts of Jaigad, Sindhudurg and Daulatabad, the churches of Goa, the caves of Ajanta and Ellora and the ghats and temples of Nasik are just few of them. Apart from it, the other highlights of the journey include a visit to the crafts village Shilpgram in Sawantwadi, a trip down the Tarkali backwaters, a wonderful chance to enjoy Konkani cuisine and cultural shows at some destinations. Moreover, plenty of time to relax and enjoy the place you are visiting is also ensured.
For those of you who wish to know exact itinerary of the journey, the starting from Mumbai is followed by a visit to Ganapatiphule, Sindhudurg, Tarkali Backwaters, Sawantwadi, Goa, Kolhapur, Pune, Aurangabad, Ellora Caves, Jalgaon, Ajanta Caves and Nasik.

You also have guide to take you round the destinations and give you its basic details.

Enjoy your two day trip through the golden beauty of the Rajasthan. Fairy Queen, the world's oldest locomotive train is a wonder itself and takes you to the wilderness of the Sariska Wild Life Sanctuary.
Historical
In the year 1855, when the Fairy Queen was constructed in Leeds, England, nobody probably expected it to attract so much of tourists' attention as it does today. At that point of time, it was sent to Calcutta (it reached here in 1895) where it was fondly named the Fairy Queen and given the number 22 by its then possessor, the East India Company. For the next 34 years it attracted the attention of whoever came to the Howrah station.
Between 1943 to 1997, the Fairy Queen satiated the curiosity of students of the Railway Zonal Training School at Chandausi and visitors of newly constructed Rail Transport Museum at Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. In between, in 1972, it also earned itself the heritage status from the government of India
However, more fame was still in store and it was in the year 1997 that the Fairy Queen got it. The phenomenal success of the Palace on Wheels inspired the tourism department to bring out this heritage train from the confines of the Railway Museum and convert it into a tourists' train.

Jeep Safari
Jeep safaris can be organised by travel agents, but they shouldn't be confused with mere hiring of vehicles to commute between different destinations. A jeep safari is probably the best and the fastest way to explore the enticing spectrum Rajasthan. Moreover, it is possible to enjoy a more comprehensive tour on the jeep and it is a smoother and more comfortable ride. An open jeep is considered ideal, as this makes one feel one with nature in the breathtaking countryside of Rajasthan. This adventure will gift you memories to last a lifetime.Jeep Safaris can be incorporated with Camel and Horse Safaris.
Safaris can be done in Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Shekhawati regions. Jeep Safari can also be done in Wildlife Parks and Bird Sanctuaries.
Usually jeep safari operators enroute journeys through the desert so you are close to villages, but remain hidden from them. In the afternoons, trips to the villages can be planned. An advance group moves ahead to set the evening's camp-usually self-sustained, with its own kitchen (food is cooked over wood fire), and tented accommodation. Baths are prepared for the travelers, and kerosene lamps used for lighting. A bonfire is organized around which evening cocktails and dinner is served. Here, in this enchanted setting with the stars looming large under the dark sky, village balladeers and minstrels are invited to sing, dance, play a musical instrument or two.
An escapade from the Concrete Jungle of the fast developing cities traversing the sands of the desert and escape into a wilderness where literally nothing but sand makes up the horizon. It is a great opportunity to escape from the tamed world rough edges, and takes you squarely into the lap of nature.
A rendezvous wth the tribal regions, the small villages, the ruins of old forts, the temple complexes adds up to providing a sense of destination to such safaris. Another rewarding region for jeep safaris is the Shekhawati belt with its painted towns that are in close proximity to each other, but interspersed with the scraggy desert where, for miles around, nothing but the sand stretches.
Jeep safaris can be fun because the pace can be varied to suit one's needs, packing in days of fast travelling with leisurely camping. Safari outfits send a recce team ahead for picnic lunches, and for setting up camps in the open. Alternates can be to stay in a choice of heritage hotels that dot the vast regions of the desert.

Eelephant Ride
Nothing can be compared with the elephant safari, which is still as regal as it used to be in the ancient past.
The most regal way of seeing Rajasthan is on an elephant safari, since nothing can even compare with the majesty of the pachyderm – no wonder the rulers used elephants for their journeys. Equipped with a howdah, a large seat on which they would sit, complete with soft silk cushions, and with a ceremonial umbrella over their heads, modern day safaris may pale in comparison, but are no less regal on that account.
The elephant treads slowly and steadily, and a safari would be ideal in and around principal towns, especially in the vicinity of wildlife sanctuaries where the same elephants can do double-duty for viewing wildlife.
Since an elephant safari is an elaborate affair, and requires many attendants for the beast as well, such camps too tend to be more lavish, and so these are best for incentive groups who can be promised an experience, the like of which they are unlikely to ever have elsewhere.

Horse Safari
The land of royal dynasties and the Rajputs, the legends of Rajasthan is never complete without the stylish and charming horses. Once, the dignity of the Rajputs were believed to lie in the skill of horse riding.
Like Camel Safari, Horse Safari in Rajasthan is one of the best ways to experience the royal grandeur of Rajasthan during your travel. Known as the 'land of kings', fearless warriors and beautiful women, Rajasthan is also famous for its forts, palaces and temples which are a reminder of the glorious past. Kingdoms were carved and established by the Rajputs warriors on horseback, while swords were stained with enemy blood.
Horses were highly priced and a Rajput warrior would give anything to own a good horse. Great care was taken to breed horses and to keep a clean and pure lineage. The result of many years of dedication and hard work helped create breeds like the Marwari, Kathiawadi and the Sindhi, each having its own distinct characteristics and bred solely for the purpose of war. These horses were noted for their stamina and fierce loyalty to their masters.
Today, tourists on Rajasthan holiday can have the pleasure of riding through trails dotted and marked with cenotaphs and tombstones of many brave and valiant Rajput warriors. Trails which take them through villages, pass huge and ancient forts and temples. Nights can be spent in ancient palaces and Garhs (small forts) now owned by the descendants of those glorious Rajput rulers. These palaces not only provide modern amenities but cultural programmes and entertainment is also available. Evenings are spent at campsites which are splashed with colour in the form of local folk dance and music.
Before embarking on a horse safari in Rajasthan, tourists are advised to wear boots and a hard hat. Breeches or jeans are comfortable. Evenings are cold and pullovers and jackets are essential. During daytime the glare of the sun can be quite harsh, so sunglasses are advisable. So, if you are game to explore the Thar Desert and world's oldest mountain chains - the Aravalis - Rajasthan travel on horseback offers a great area for adventure activities.

The rawanhatta consists of half a coconut shell resonator covered with membrane, bound to it with the help of cotton cords, a two feet long bamboo stick fixed to the resonator with two main strings, one of horse tail and other of steel. In addition to these are sympathetic steel strings varying between three to thirteen, passing over a bridge and than directly to the wooden pegs fixed to the sides of the stick. The dexterity lies in playing each successive note, which is clear, detached and synchronizing with singing, changing the rhythm and displacing the normal beats and accents, whenever it is required, depending upon the musical situation.

Bankia can be played with number of instruments, but the best it is heard with the dhol. It is one of the most favourite instrument of Rajasthan at the time of auspicious and festive occasions. The sound of Bankia gives a welcome boost to the tempo of the drummer, stimulates singers, and provides refreshing fillip to the dancers. Playing Bankia is a unique instrument, which is generally used to strengthen the overall effect of the celebration.

Dhol
Dhol was a popular musical instrument in both formal and informal dance performances for decades. Dhol players were once sought-after individuals for occasions of celebration.
Dusk has descended on the Garhwal hills and the music of the local drum and bagpipe keeps a small crowd, riveted to its haunt, on a beaten track. This, however, may be one of the last few times they get to hear it. Music from the Uttarakhand "dhol," or drum, once enveloped these entire hills. Today, these beats sound the knell of not just one of the finest instruments but also of a people.
"There are only 10 people left on these hills who know the complete art of playing the dhol. It is just not a viable option for us drummers any more," says Sohan Lal, 32, one of the very few who still plays the dhol. "Once the dhol dictated our entire lives; we played it when a child was born, at weddings, at deaths and at any other ceremony. Today, we don't get to hear it even on special occasions."
A socially marginalized group of people called "Das" usually plays the dhol. The instrument is integrally bound to the social and religious lives of the hill people.
"Every village used to have four or five Das families and only one is called to play the dhol at a village function," says Lal.Once little bands of musicians wound their way to different villages on the hill slopes.
Hindu epics and stories were recited and set to the beat of the dhol. These festivities could go on for as long as 1,000 hours. "Pavade", or traditional songs in praise of god, were sung for three days and three nights to the accompaniment of the dhol."There is not enough money in it. The brass bands are called at all the functions and they get the lion's share of the money," complains Lal. "There is no respect for us.
Villagers get drunk, abuse us and create a scene. How can we continue to play like this?" Lal has written a book on the dhol with a view to preserving the dying art. "There has not been any documentation of the dhol music before this," he says. Many drummers have moved to the plains in search of jobs. Besides there are no musicians left to teach the younger generation an art form that was once also used to communicate messages over vast distances.
Even historically, arts and crafts of Uttaranchal have had it tough. While arts flourished under royal patronage in other parts, it was different in this region. Royal patronage was only salutary, since the local princedoms were too poor to afford the luxury of court musicians and dancers.
The economy of performing arts in the region has therefore always been fragile. Today the dhol is dying a natural death. These drummers are desperately looking for new ways to keep the home fires burning. Small efforts are under way to help this community to revive the music of their dhols.
The Shri Bhuvaneshwari Mahila Ashram (SBMA) here is trying to identify the problems of the drummers and arrange for artistes to teach it to the younger generation.
There are those who can play the dhol but very few who can teach it," says Gajendra Nautiyal of the Indian People's Theatre who coordinates with SBMA in an effort to preserve the art form.
"We plan to organize live performances of the dhol. We will also plan to find master trainers and have a residential training course here for eight children at a time," says Nautiyal.
"We are living with the last generation of dhol players, we have to save this music before it dies out" says Lal, for whom the beat of the dhol is still more than a way of life.

Ghoongharoo
Ghoongharoo is an instrument made of small round hollow metal balls with a pebble inside. Khartal is mostly used in devotional singing.
Manjeera is a pair of concave cymbals, cast in an alloy of brass, copper and zinc and connected to each other with a cotton cord passing through the holes in their centre. Manjeera produces a rhythmic tinkling sounds, when clanged against the tapered edges of each other. The sound of Manjeera clashing varies, depending upon the size, weight and the proportions of metals in the alloy. A virtuoso performer can produce nuances by striking at different points of one, with the rim of other. An interesting use of the instrument is made by the performers of the teratali, when as many as thirteen cymbals are put in action for the visitors.

Khartal
Khartal is considered to be a devotional instrument, which is used at the time of religious singing.
The khartal is also known as kartal. This too is an ancient instrument. It has always been a favourite with saints and seers. Even today we find the khartal being used in temples and gurdwaras. According to S Bandhopadhyaya in Musical Instruments of India kara means hand and tala means clapping, i.e., the instrument played by hands to keep rhythm in devotional song, kirtana and dance. Despite being used for devotional music it has carved an important place for itself amongst the exponents of folk music in Punjab. The contemporary rural bhangra dancers sport the toombi or iktara in one hand and khartal in the other while dancing. Meera Bai attained salvation by singing devotional songs using the toombi in one hand and the khartal in the other. This instrument even today accompanies bhajans, hymns, or mournful songs on sad occasions. A pair of wooden castanets with little bells attached to them was the earliest form of the khartal. Khartal comprises two similar shaped wooden pieces and is approximately eight to twelve inches long and two to three inches wide. Small round brass pieces are affixed over these wooden pieces. One of the pieces has a space for the thumb and the other to hold four fingers. It is played by the same hand.

Morchang
Morchang is the most favourite instrument for Langa community of Rajasthan, a wrought iron instrument, much akin to the Jews harp, which produces twanging sounds.
A morsing (also mourching or morching) is a percussion instrument, mainly used in the Carnatic music of South India. It can be categorized under lamellophones, which is in the category of plucked idiophones. It consists of a metal ring in the shape of a horseshoe with two parallel forks which form the frame, and a metal tongue in the middle, between the forks, fixed to the ring at one end and free to vibrate at the other. The metal tongue is bent at the free end in a plane perpendicular to the circular ring so that it can be struck and is made to vibrate. This bent part is called the trigger.
The morsing is an Indian version of the Jew's harp. Its origin in India is not very clear though many myths and stories prevail. In India it is found mainly in South India, Rajasthan and also in some parts of Assam. In South India, where it is called morsing, mourching or morching, it features in Carnatic concerts and percussion ensembles. In Rajasthan it is called a morchang and is used as percussion instrument in folk music.
Playing technique
The morsing is placed between the teeth and held firmly in the hand and is struck using the other hand to produce sound. Movement of the player's tongue, variations of the throat and blowing and sucking of air through the instrument produces different sounds or overtones.
The morsing is firmly held in the hand, the frame or the ring between the palm and the fingers usually in the left hand. Care should be taken to see that the middle part or the metal tongue is not being touched when held idle. Then the two parallel forks are gently pressed against the front upper teeth. The trigger is plucked with the tip of the index finger. Sound is produced due to the vibration of the metal tongue of the morsing in the mouth and the throat cavity. Movement of the player's tongue with constant plucking can produce very fast patterns of sound. By constricting the space in the mouth and throat many variations of sound can be produced.
Tuning
The basic pitch of the instrument can be varied very little. Significantly, the pitch of the instrument can only be reduced and not increased. To reduce the pitch a little, bee-wax can be applied on the plucking end. To increase the pitch, it can be filed, although this may damage the instrument.

Hawa Mahal In Jaipur
The enchanting Hawa Mahal, a Pandora's box of wonders, is a multi-layered palace, with a profusion of windows and stone screens. 'Hawa Mahal', Palace of the Wind, is one of the major landmarks of Jaipur and an integral part of the City Palace
Constructed in 1799, Hawa Mahal is the most sensational monument in the city of Jaipur. The palace, overlooks one of Jaipur's main streets and was originally constructed to offer women of the court an upper hand, so that they can watch the activities taking place in the bazaar and the surrounding streets behind stone-carved screens. For this purpose, it was designed with over 900 niches, and the entire building is shaped like a crown adorning Lord Krishna's head.
The site offers superb views of the city, including the many old palaces and houses which were painted ocher-pink for the 1853 visit of Prince Albert. This five-story, pyramid-shaped structure is made up of small casements, each with tiny windows and arched roofs, beautifully modeled and carved. There is a total lack of ornamentation on the inner face of the building. The chambers are plain and more mass of pillars and passages leading to the top storey.
It's Beauty
Famous for it's Beehive like structure, the entrance to the Hawa Mahal is in the rear side of the main building, the front portion of the building having no entry at all, unlike conventional buildings. The Hawa Mahal is made of red and pink sand stone, beautifully outlined with white borders and motif's painted with quick lime.
Entrance & Courtyard
The entrance to Hawa Mahal is from the City Palace side, through a stately door which opens into a spacious courtyard. The courtyard has a double storeyed building on three sides. There is a small archaeological museum here. Only the eastern wing has three more storeys above, which are just a single room thick. The building, standing on a high podium, is a fifty-foot high thin shield, less than a foot in thickness, with small intimate chambers, which give this palace its unique facade. There are no regular stairs to reach the upper floors, but only ramps.
Architecture Of Hawa Mahal
This five storey building of unusual architecture designed by Lal Chand Usta, is a stunning example of Rajput artistry made of red and pink sand stone, beautifully outlined with white borders and motif's painted with quick lime. Its facade from the road side makes Hawa Mahal look more like a delicate screen than a palace. This five-story, pyramid-shaped structure has tier after tier of 953 small casements, each with tiny lattice worked (Jali) pink windows, small balconies and arched roofs with hanging cornices, exquisitely modeled and carved.
